At A.P Deauville, next to fragrances, we believe strong designs in packaging and label art work make great products. So we always keep an eye out for design stories or fun articles about design and share them- even if they have nothing to do with armpits, hair care, or as we say, making the world a cleaner and better smelling place!
The Stories Behind User Icons
Harvard Business Review in its May 2014 issue has a two page story about the design source of common user interface icons such as the “@” and the symbol for blue-tooth (hint a Danish King was involved!) It’s a fun read and completely worth cost to download it.
The @ symbol about which we learn there is dedicated an entire MOMA collection, had its origins in the sixth century and always connoted the concept of “at”or “at a rate of”. Then the team that developed the internet in the early 1970’s decided to use it to denote location in web or email addresses and rest is history……
There is more about the symbol for USB, Firewire and ethernet. Design is fun and it matters.
